Frank Easton was born in Barnet, Hertfordshire in 1932.
He started his life working for a shipping company before doing National service at the age of 18. He then went to work as an estate agent, firstly in London with the GLC and then with a private firm in Reading.
During his time in Reading he was made redundant and subsequently decided to open his own business in antiques, a business he ran for 36 years with his wife.
In 2004 he moved to Auchtermuchty in Scotland.
Since the 90's Frank has been creating dioramas and boxed narratives and for 20 years much of this work was made in Auchtermuchty and have remained out of sight, hidden within his house in Fife.
In 2024 Frank relocated to Wiltshire and during this move his work came to light.
His daughter who went to assist him with his move discovered a mountain of works smashed into pieces in a skip. Shocked she retrieved what was salvageable and stopped him from destroying any further works.
At the core of this first ever solo exhibition both for the gallery and Frank , 19 of his salvaged boxed constructions are on display.
Colourful and curious, each piece is a personal commentary on what is in his head; happening in the outside world or just simple storytelling. They have been carefully carved and constructed by hand and presented in a box or collage format.
Patrick Elliot GMA Edinburgh, comments:
‘What’s striking is that they really don’t look like the work of an elderly...... They are well crafted look technically accomplished, like the work of a youngish, experienced artist with knowledge of the history of collage and constructions.’
In a recent interview with Frank in Devizes he divulged that there were originally 120 completed boxed works. Virgin Square has 19 in this exhibition and only 18 are in Frank’s possession. Tragically 83 works are remain missing/destroyed.
