Virgin Square opened in December 2024 as a space for international art in St.Monans, Scotland.
The Director Alan Kilpatrick graduated from Central St Martin's School of Art in London. Alan's career has spanned working as an artist, lecturer, teacher, resident artist, invited artist and art critic, as well as having spent over a decade involved with East Pier Smokehouse.
The inaugural exhibition at Virgin Square, A Baker’s Dozen, brought together an international group of artists and heralded a new chapter in the life of this particular building. Set in a former bakery, Alan welcomed the opportunity to resurrect the artistic legacy of 10 Virgin Square begun by the prior owner in the 1980’s by inviting a community of practitioners whose work he admired to exhibit.
Virgin Square artists are painters, printmakers, designers, writers and ceramicists with diverse cultural heritages from India, Germany, Ireland, Palestine and the UK. The mission is to forge international dialogues, expand working with artists across all disciplines to establish a challenging contemporary art space with exhibitions and events held throughout the year.
